Abraham Lincoln was the president during the Civil War,which we all know. His life was amazing, but was sad.He was born into this world on 12 February,1809 in Hodgenville,Kentucky.
His parents were poor and neither were they well known. At a young age his mother died and,he and his father moved to Illinois. There he worked hard chopping wood and trying to help earn money for the family. But,he did not just work hard to earn money. He also was eager to learn and worked hard to be a good student. This led to him eventually becoming a lawyer when he grew up,which was an accomplishment as he was raised from a poor family..He worked 8 years as a lawyer, and married Mary Todd in 1842.They had four children but only 1 grew up to adulthood, and the rest passed away.In 1847 he was elected to The House of Representatives for Illinois, and served from 1847 to 1849.Then he started working back as a lawyer in Illinois. He then ran for Senate with Democratic representative Stephen Douglas who wanted slavery to happen. However,Lincoln opposed slavery and did not want it to happen.Though he lost the election,he went on to become the first republican president,in 1861,which was one of the biggest accomplishments for him.It was almost all of the North and West which supported him.The South which had been trying to break away from the North for quite some time, was now ready to secede from the North.Having a president who did not want slavery also sparked this.Lincoln did not want the South to secede and thus began the Civil War.Under Lincoln's patient leadership, the North won, which was another huge accomplishment. He was a hero as he did not risk that maybe people would want slavery as they got money from it,or that people would not like him.He did what was right and in the end he won.Sadly,he was killed on 15 April,1865 by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C.,while watching the play,Our American Cousin. To conclude,no matter what anybody says,I think Abraham Lincoln was the greatest man on Earth.
